The banana tree is one of the oldest cultivated plant and one of the most important fruit crop in the world that is native to the tropical South and Southeast Asia. These plants are typically 5 meters in height and can grow on a wide variety of soils. Many houses grow Banana trees in their garden as it doesn’t take a lot of effort to cultivate.



The banana tree is packed with nutrients and vitamins that the leaf, trunk, fruit (Raw or Ripe) and flower is used in cooking various delicious dishes around the world.

Growing a banana tree is beneficial in many ways and to list of a few,

  1. They are great natural windbreakers and privacy screens for houses
  2. They keep the sun out of your window
  3. Their leaves can be fed to the cattle and horses
  4. Their dried trunk remains are used in making baskets and mattresses

The Banana leaf is widely used for cooking, serving and packing food in the Southeast Asian countries for centuries.

Eating food on banana leaf has various health benefits as it is packed with polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants. These polyphenols battle free radicals in the body thus making a person immune to various diseases.

The Banana leaf is also rich in polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

It has natural anti-bacterial properties that kills any germs in the food thus aiding in easy digestion.

By serving hot food on banana leaf, the flavour of the food is enhanced as well. Therefore, it is widely used in auspicious ceremonies for serving food for the guests in South India.
